The Durham Community Concert Band (DCCB) invites young artists to enter its second BIANNUAL YOUTH CONCERTO COMPETITION.

This contest is designed to give young wind and percussion players an opportunity to perform as soloists with the DCCB, and to encourage young artists by awarding cash prizes to be used at the winners’ discretion to further their studies on their instruments. The selected winner(s) will perform with the Durham Concert Band on the April 3, 2011 Spring Concert in Baldwin Auditorium on the Duke University campus.

PRIZES

First Prize will be a cash award of $500 and a guaranteed opportunity to perform with DCCB. Second Prize will be a cash award of $250 and the probability of performing with DCCB as time permits

ELIGIBILITY

The 2011 DCCB Youth Concerto Competition is open to wind and percussion players ages 14-20 on April 1, 2011 who reside or study in Durham-area counties: Durham, Orange, Chatham, and Wake. There is no application fee to enter the competition.

GUIDELINES

Applicants must complete an Application Form and submit one Letter of Recommendation from a private teacher or band director. DCCB Board members and Music Director will review applications and select those who are eligible to audition. Those selected for auditions must prepare a substantial section from a concerto or another solo work with band accompaniment for their particular instrument and must provide their own piano accompanist for the audition. Audition repertoire may be selected from the list of suggestions enclosed (below). Other pieces may be proposed if there are suitable wind-band arrangements available for purchase or rental. Applicants proposing to perform a work not on the suggested list should consult with the Music Director before auditioning on that work. The panel of judges will consist of well-qualified wind/percussion professionals and adjudicators. Those auditioning must provide three copies of the music for the judges. The winner(s) of the competition must be available to rehearse with DCCB on Thursday evenings in Durham for up to three weekly rehearsals before the April, 2011 concert.
